On October 20th, NSSEO proudly welcomed nursing students from Harper College’s Nursing Program to Miner School for an immersive day of clinicals. This meaningful collaboration gave students the opportunity to work side by side with NSSEO’s dedicated 1:1 school nurses, gaining firsthand experience in the specialized and compassionate care required to support students with complex medical and educational needs.
At Miner, the visiting nursing students observed the vital role that school nurses play in providing individualized care—supporting students’ health, safety, and readiness to learn in a dynamic educational setting. Together, Harper nursing students and NSSEO nurses navigated real-world care routines, developed confidence in communication and teamwork, and deepened their understanding of the holistic role of nurses in a special education environment.
Harper College provides an exceptional path to clinical readiness, enhancing student education and confidence through a unique combination of diverse clinical rotations and high-fidelity simulation. Through partnerships like this one with NSSEO, Harper’s nursing students gain a nuanced understanding of pediatric care in a variety of real-world environments—from inpatient units and school nursing placements to long-term care facilities and early childhood programs. This range of experiences helps prepare future nurses to meet the full spectrum of pediatric patient needs, from acute illness and chronic management to wellness and developmental care.
Both NSSEO and Harper College are excited about how this partnership will continue to grow throughout the year and into the future—providing valuable, real-world learning experiences for nursing students while shining a light on the critical, specialized work of school nurses in special education.
