John Paul Sherkey, a student at our Kirk School, was on ABC7’s School Showcase this morning to meet his favorite news correspondent, ABC 7’s Tracy Butler.
Every morning John’s teacher Beth Oosthuizen’s has the classroom watch the weather forecast as part of their daily schedule and John’s smile lights up everytime Tracy is on the screen. So Beth and the team of teachers in the classroom (Autumn Olin - Occupational Therapist, Jess LaPorte & Becky Perthel - Speech Pathologists) decided they should reach out to ABC7’s team and send in some fan mail and the next thing you know John and Tracy are sitting next to each other. It was a few months in the making but it was such a special moment for all involved. You can see how much it meant to John by the simple fact that he had that wonderful smile on his face the whole segment, but Tracy was genuinely touched, she even carried the card John made her on to the next stage for the next news segment.
