Session: Bullying Prevention Guidance

Session Description:

In this presentation, Josh Peters will cover recent updates to the IL School Code section 27-23.7. Public Act 103-0047 (effective June 9, 2023) amended the requirements of school/district bullying prevention policies created under this section.

Additionally, Josh will cover the new data reporting requirements under this section and the Racism-Free Schools Law.

 

Presenter Bio:

Josh Peters is a Springfield native and proud alumnus of Springfield SD 186. He graduated from Southern Illinois University Carbondale with a Bachelor's of Music in Music Education. Prior to joining the ISBE, Mr. Peters served as the Music Teacher for Butler and Ridgely Elementary Schools in Springfield. As a Principal Consultant in the ISBE Wellness & Student Care Department, Mr. Peters serves as the agency lead for state mandates concerning bullying prevention and also works in the areas of school discipline and physical restraint, time out, and isolated time out.

Session Description:

This session will focus on the Residential Placements: Guidance and Frequently Asked Questions document recently released by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). Amanda Clay and William Hrabe will provide an overview of the guidance, identify hot topics related to residential placement, and provide examples of how to apply the guidance in practice. The session will include an open Q&A section where participants can ask about specific situations related to residential placement.

Session: Training Qualified Interpreters for IEP Meetings (TQII)

Session Description:

The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and a team of experts at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, have worked together to develop a modular online training program for people who would like to be designated as "qualified IEP interpreters." This program is a blend of synchronous and asynchronous online training and testing sessions, consisting of these three (3) modules. This presentation describes the training sessions, including requirements of the relevant laws and ongoing efforts to expand the program to more languages and more trainees.

 

Presenter Bio:

Dr. Kiel Christianson's extensive career includes serving as a Professor & Chair in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, the Director of the SLATE Doctoral Concentration Program in College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Co-Director of the Illinois Language & Literature Initiative (ILLI) at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science & Technology, and the Director of the EdPsych Psycholinguistics Lab at the Beckman Institute. Before coming to Illinois, he was a faculty member at the University of Aizu (Japan), and taught courses at the University of Mainz (Germany), University of Massachusetts-Amherst, Michigan State University, and Ball State University.
